Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’

3rd Class, Art  Tagged , , No Comments »

Vincent Van Gogh himself would have been very impressed with the art work produced in Third Class this week. The children have been studying the life and work of Van Gogh and they decided to focus on his most famous painting ‘Sunflowers’. They recreated it in their own way and the finished pieces are just stunning. Well done to all the budding artists in Third Class!

Ancient Egypt 🐪🐫☀️🔶

In 3rd class we have been busy doing a project on Ancient Egypt recently. We have done a lot of individual and group research both in books and on the computers and now we are experts on the life of Tutankhamen, mummies, pyramids and all things Egyptian. We sorted through pictures of historical artefacts and worked in groups to study Ancient Egyptian methods of farming. Of course we have also been busy doing spectacular works of Art that are displayed in the third class corridor. We particularly loved writing our names in hieroglyphics!

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady hosted a ceremony to honour the winners in the Cathaoirleach’s Awards 2015. The scheme was introduced to acknowledge the contribution of volunteers across a wide range of local activity.

ALL who do voluntary work for their communities were hailed as “Sligo’s unsung heroes” at an awards ceremony in County Hall on Wednesday night.

CATEGORY: Young Enterprise

WINNER: Third Class Mercy Primary School

Presented by: Councillor Gino O’Boyle

THE award in this category went to a very special group of young people.

On 6th December 2014 Saoirse Foley’s beloved mother Patrice passed away after a brave battle with cancer.

Saoirse’s 23 class-mates were there for her with their heart-felt
kindness and sympathy. Very quickly the sympathy turned into
‘empathy’ and the young pupils considered ways in which they could actively support their friend.

Their aim was two-fold:
To honour Saoirse’s mother
To raise funds for North West Hospice
After exploring a number of options, they decide on a cake sale.
Everyone became involved, including teachers and parents, and
through their efforts they raised over €800 for North West Hospice.

This has only been part of this wonderful story, they have given
support and friendship in countless other ways. They are a special group of young people and they should be really proud of what they have done.

The Cathaoirleach’s Awards 2015 in the category of ‘Young Enterprise’ was presented to Saoirse Foley and her great friends in Third Class Mercy Primary School.
