World Book Day took place today in our school. We had a fantastic day, all the children dressed up in their favourite book character. The Junior classes had a very enjoyable parade in the hall followed by a senior parade later in the day. Ms.Fahy made a fantastic job retelling the classic story, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears to all the junior classes.

Granny Cat

Drama, English  Tagged , , No Comments »

Here is another poem from THE SECRET LIVES OF MOTHERS, the new book of poems by our writer-in-residence Gerry Boland. The book is available to buy in the school and costs €8. Gerry will sign it and dedicate it. It’s also available in LIBER on O’Connell St.

Granny Cat lies under the blazing sun
Dreams of the first fight she ever won

She twitches her tail
Once or twice
In her dream she is chasing
Three blind mice

She hears a sparrow
In the hedge
Hears it fly
To the window ledge

She doesn’t move
She doesn’t stir
She just lies there dozing
In her matted fur

Granny Cat lies under the blazing sun
Dreams of the first fight she ever won

Aistear- The Vet’s Clinic

Drama, English, Mrs. Rolston's Class  Tagged , , , , No Comments »

Aistear is the early childhood curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years. The word Aistear is the Irish word for journey and was chosen because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journeys.

Aistear is used to implement the primary school curriculum in infant classes in Our Lady of Mercy. The children play every day, with an emphasis on active learning and oral language development .Curriculum subjects covered during Aistear include: S.E.S.E., S.P.H.E., oral language, reading, writing, maths, art and drama.

During our Aistear time at the moment, we are exploring the theme of The Vet’s Clinic. We have lots of sick animals every day, but luckily we have very experienced vets to care for them. Some animals even need to stay over night after their surgery!. We will be changing our theme next week to The Hairdresser/ Barber.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Drama, Ms. Donohoe's Class  Tagged , , No Comments »

The teddies in the Junior Infant classroom wouldn’t go to sleep even after their bedtime story. The little girl (teacher) who was looking after the teddies promised them a picnic if they went to sleep for her and so they did. However the little girl didn’t know how to plan a picnic so she asked the children in Junior Infants for their help. They helped her to pack the basket full of yummy food. They packed sandwiches, fruit, biscuits, cake, chocolate and lemonade. When they were ready to go, the little girl and the children woke up the teddies and they set off on their picnic. Below, the children tell of some of the mimed activities they got up to with their teddies after the picnic.
