Energy Workshop

2nd Class, Geography, Green-Schools Programme, Ms. Donohoe's Class, S.E.S.E, Science  Tagged , , , , , No Comments »

Lisa visited our classroom today to talk to us about energy. We formed an energy chain to show how energy moves from the sun to the wheat growing in the field, then the farmer harvests the wheat and it is made in to cornflakes in a factory. We eat the cornflakes to give us energy!

Afterwards we had a race to see which team could dress themselves well for the cold months ahead to keep heat energy inside their bodies!

For September and October we are working in the Athletics strand in our P.E lessons. We watched videos of other children running and talked about what they were doing well and how they could improve. For example, we should look forward when we run. We assessed our own running skills in partners this week. Great running everyone!!!

Lots of boys and girls from 2nd class made a special donation to the homeless today. They donated some of their Holy Communion money to people in need. We were so happy to have raised €245.70. We hope that this money will help people in some way. Thanks to Mary, from the Simon Community for coming to our school. The boys and girls asked Mary lots of questions about her job and about all the wonderful work that is done. Well done 2nd class.

Fun with Marbles

Science Week is taking place this week and 2nd class are busy experimenting!!
What do you think will happen if you roll a marble along a flat surface so that it hits a secondary stationary marble?
The rolling marble collides with the still marble. It stops, and the still marble now rolls.
Do you know why this happens? Have a look at the video and you can find out.

‘The Great Mercy Bake Off’ For North West Hospice

2nd Class, General  Tagged , , No Comments »

We are very proud of the children in second class who raised €800 last month for

North West Hospice by holding a cake sale in their classes.

The cake sale was held to raise money for North West Hospice who were so wonderful when caring for Patrice Foley, who sadly passed away from cancer recently. Patrice’s daughter Saoirse, together with her friend Shannon Cronin brought the idea of a cake sale to raise funds for the hospice to their teacher Ms. Noone. Soon all of 2nd class was involved! And what a fantastic idea it turned out to be.

On Friday last members of Saoirse’s family as well as Bernadette from North West Hospice visited the school where Bernadette was presented with a cheque for an amazing €800!
